A Perfect Fall Day at the North Carolina Zoo

Welcome to the North Carolina Zoo- the world's largest natural habitat zoo!

We spent a perfect fall afternoon at the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro - and it was amazing!

This is one of the biggest natural habitat zoos in the world. The animals have so much space to roam, just like in the wild.

I arrived right when the gates opened, coffee in hand, and the air was that perfect crisp October air. The maples and oaks inside the park were already turning – burnt orange, mustard yellow, deep crimson. Honestly, I came for the animals, but I stayed for the fall colors too. The zoo is massive (seriously, you walk a LOT), but every turn feels like a little hike through North Carolina itself.

The King Was Taking a Nap 👑

The first big stop was the lions. And there he was – this huge, majestic male just lying in the grass, soaking up the sun like he owns the place (because he does). Everyone went quiet. You could hear the leaves rustling and his slow breathing.

I was pretty far from the glass, but I zoomed in with my iPhone 17 Pro Max, and I swear you can see every whisker. The new telephoto is insane. No grain, no blur – just pure lion. He looked at me for like two seconds, and I almost dropped my phone. Worth it.

My Favorite – The Giraffe on the Hill 🦒

Okay, I have a favorite and it's this giraffe. She was standing on that big rock like she was posing for Vogue. Long legs, long neck, perfectly framed by those autumn trees turning orange behind her.

I've seen giraffes before, but never this close and this calm. She just looked out over the whole habitat like she was the queen of the hill. The light hit her just right – golden hour even though it was only 11am. All the colors in this photo are straight out of the camera. Fall in North Carolina does not need a filter.

The Queen on a Walk

Then Her Majesty arrived. The lioness came out for her morning stroll, and oh my god, graceful is an understatement. Every step was so intentional, so powerful, but soft at the same time. She walked right along the fence line, so close I could see the muscle moving under her fur.

All the kids started whispering "lion! lion!" but she just ignored us, as she should. I got this shot mid-step, and it's my new wallpaper. I keep looking at it and remembering how quiet it felt, even with a crowd.

The Gorillas Made My Day 🦍

I saved the gorillas for last, and I'm so glad I did. They were the most emotional part of the day for me. One was sitting against the wall, munching on something green, totally focused – like me eating my morning granola bar. The other one was just… sitting. Back against the wall, legs crossed, staring. So human-like.

I stood there for maybe 10 minutes. People came and went, but I couldn't leave. There's something about their eyes – you feel seen. I didn't expect to feel emotional at a zoo, but I did. If you go, please don't rush the gorilla habitat. Sit, watch, breathe. It's special.
